Prevention and Early Intervention
Goal
The goal of the Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) component of the MHSA is to help counties implement services that promote wellness, foster health, and prevent the suffering that can result from untreated mental illness. The PEI component requires collaboration with consumers and family members in the development of PEI projects and programs.
PEI Programs in Lake County
Early Intervention Services
Provides early detection and intervention for youth and young adults who are developing early signs of psychosis and mood disorders in order to decrease the duration of untreated psychosis and mood disorders before the disorders becoming disabling.
Mother-Wise
Mother-Wise offers consistent opportunities for social support to new and expecting mothers in an effort to prevent, or limit the severity of, Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMAD). Individuals report feeling better after connecting with Mother-Wise, the program makes moms feel welcome and comfortable enough to seek and receive help if, and when, they need it.
The Nurturing Education & Skills Training Program (NEST)
The Nurturing Education and Skills Training Program (NEST) provides transitional housing for young pregnant or parenting families and their children for 15 months. During this time, families work with a 3-person team (Program Supervisor, Home Specialist, Child Development Specialist) in a youth-driven process to reduce risk factors and increase self-sufficiency.
Friendly Visitor Program
The Friendly Visitor Program recruits and trains volunteers to visit homebound seniors. This helps to keep potentially isolated seniors connected and helps increase their independence while giving them something to look forward to on a weekly basis.
Peer Support Centers
Big Oaks
The Big Oak Peer Support Center serves as a center of learning for self-improvement and a link to mental health services for the community of Lake County. The center provides a positive and supportive environment for people who may be facing life struggles, experiencing homelessness, mental health or substance use issues.
Circle of Native Minds
A wellness center that provides culturally relevant wellness-oriented services to the Native American communities of Lake County. The center offers outreach and engagement for the local tribal communities, training for suicide prevention, and a community meeting place with tribal history and cultural library. The staff provides a welcoming, culturally sensitive environment, allowing community members an opportunity to connect with their elders and begin the road to recovery.
La Voz de la Esparanza
(The Voice of Hope) is a wellness center that provides culturally relevant, wellness-oriented services to community members. The focus of the center is to provide education and prevention services to the Latino communities of Lake County. Staff links the Latino community with available resources to improve their overall health. The center helps to break the language barrier that often prevents people from seeking help.
Family Support Center
The Family Support Center is a safe, comfortable environment in which to learn more about behavioral health services in our community, get connected to appropriate services/programs and socialize with others in the community. The center provides resources, referrals and support for families involved with the County mental health system.
The Harbor on Main
The overall goal of The Harbor is to increase safety, well-being and self-sufficiency to ensure a successful transition to independent adulthood for Transitional Age Youth (TAY) ages 16 to 25. These goals are achieved by providing Peer Support, Community Outreach and Engagement and Targeted Support Groups.
Mental Health First Aid
Youth Mental Health First Aid
6-hour training course teaches how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders in youth and gives adults who work with youth the skills they need to reach out and provide initial support to children and adolescents who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to appropriate care.
Teen Mental Health First Aid
Three 90-minute classes or six 45-minute classes teaches high school students how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders among their friends and peers.
Prevention Mini-Grant Program
