If container is empty and contents were nontoxic, recycle curbside in your blue cart or drop-off at recycling center. If contents were toxic, and container is empty, dispose of in trash. If container is not empty, and contents are toxic, take to HazMobile event for free disposal.

Ammunition and explosives can be taken to the Lake County Sheriff's Office, but you first MUST make an appointment by calling 262-4200 to schedule. Do NOT transport ammunition or explosives without first speaking to the Sheriff's office.

4. Antifreeze

Used motor oil can be recycled by taking to one of several Used Oil Collection Centers throughout the county.

Antifreeze can be dropped-off at no charge at the two Recycling Centers at no cost.

All other automotive fluids such as brake fluid, transmission fluid, etc. are hazardous materials. Please do not dispose of in the trash or down the drain; it is illegal and harmful to you and the environment. Fluids can be taken to HazMobile events that are held monthly around the county.

If they are still in good working order, consider donating to a thrift store.

Call your hauler to schedule a “Bulky Item Pick-Up” for large appliances or drop-off at a recycling center. Proof of residency required.

Large appliances - $10  fee for major appliances including refrigerators, stoves, freezers, air conditioners, etc. 
Small appliances - Free for small appliances including microwave ovens, toasters, blenders, etc.

Appliances, fuel tanks, and tires must be removed. Usable building materials can be donated to Lake County Habitat for Humanity or offered on Lakeport/Kelseyville Freecycle.

Dumpsters can be rented from the hauler that services the construction site. In the unicorporated areas of the County, it is illegal to have a dumpster delivered by any company other than your hauler per County ordinance.

9. Batteries

When disposed of in the trash or poured down a sink or storm drain, the toxic chemical components in products like paint, turpentine, acid or lye-based cleaners, household and car batteries, pesticides, and herbicides will damage the environment.

These items end up in Clear Lake or other waterways endangering the health of all - children, wildlife, pets, and the environment.

Household hazardous waste is collected from Lake County residents the third Friday and Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at rotating ends of the lake for convenience to all residents in Lake County.

Most items are accepted free. Businesses must make an appointment by calling 234-6400 and a small fee will apply. Dates, locations, and times are available on the schedule page.

• State law prohibits delivery of more than 15 gallons per vehicle.
• Propane tanks (any compressed cylinders), maximum 5 gallons.
• Be prepared to show identification as a Lake County resident.
• Electronics and used oil are accepted at no charge at Lake County Waste Solutions and Southlake Refuse & Recycling.

Hazardous materials that can be dropped-off include:

Televisions and computer monitors are accepted at no charge at Lake County Waste Solutions and Southlake Refuse & Recycling.

Paint is also available on a first-come, first-served basis at drop-off events, as well as Lake County Waste Solutions in Lakeport.

If in good shape, consider offering on Freecycle. Otherwise can be taken to the Eastlake Landfill or Lake County Waste Solutions for a fee (call ahead for large quantities) or schedule a bulky item pick-up with your hauler if you subscribe to residential curbside service.

If they are in good working order - donate to a thrift store or post on Freecycle.
Frames - Recyclable as scrap metal at recycling center.
Tires - $1 each to recycle at recycling center.
Seat - Can be disposed of as trash.

If the boat is in good working order, consider donating to a local thrift store or offering on the Lakeport/Kelseyville Freecycle.

If the boat is not in working order, it can be disposed of at the Eastlake Landfill for a fee. The motor(s) and oil must be removed prior to disposal.

• If they are re-usable, donate to schools, library, county jail, (please call to schedule donation) or any thrift store. 
• Contact used bookstores for possible buy-back or store credit.
• Paperback and hardcover (with cover removed) books are recyclable curbside in your blue cart or drop-off free at recycling center. Covers on hardback books must be removed and disposed of with trash.

18. Yard Waste

Grass clippings, leaves, pruning waste, branches, unpainted and untreated wood are all considered organics, green waste and/or wood waste. Painted or treated wood must be disposed of as refuse - do NOT burn treated or painted wood! It is hazardous to your health, the environment, and it is illegal.

Clean wood (nails are okay) can be recycled curbside in the green carts. (Both green waste bins and recycling bins are provided free-of-charge with regular curbside service).  Small amounts of fruit and vegetable scraps my be placed in green waste containers - as all materials are composted (no meat, dairy, or ready-made products). Green waste also can be delivered to facilities for a small fee.
